Gaming table - is the build in led light enough as the only lightsource?

Main Post:

Hey boardgamers,

I'm thinking of getting a boardgame table, something likes this

For those of you with a table like this, with build in led stripes: if this is the only lightsource in a dark room, would it be enough? Like reading text on cards, or stuff on the board? Or is this kind of light just for fancy looks?

I imagine that it would be difficult to read the skill of a too many bones boss (cus he's up high on his healthchips).

If I order a table like the one I linked, I must decide if it should have the led lights or not. We're talking 520€ more with the lights (cus theres a sale going on in may without the lights).

Any input would be much appreciated.

EDIT: Ordered the table without the lights. Thanks everyone!

Top Comment: Absolutely not enough on their own. Mine don't have a true white (RGB instead of RGBW) and so the color tinge makes it even more difficult to read from them. They're nice for accent lighting, but definitely not really a functional light source. Even if you got RGBW set to white only and bright enough to use to read text, you're gonna blind the players on the opposite side.

LED lightning that reacts to games?

Main Post:

Hello! I was wondering if there is some sort of LED lightning that reacts to game sounds? Like for example, in valorant, when you get shot, it flashes bright red?

I have found the govee AI sync box but it seems to be out of stock and its also quite expensive. I was wondering if there are any other alternatives that offer this function?

Otherwise I'll happily buy some rgb lights from aliexpress or amazon, thanks!

Top Comment: The Razer LED controller does this.

How an obsession with Ultima 7 led to some of PC's best RPGs

Main Post: How an obsession with Ultima 7 led to some of PC's best RPGs

Top Comment:

Ultima 7 was so ahead of its time. NPCs with unique dialogue and text. An open world with day night cycle and NPCs with routines. Being able to pickpocket anyone you want, go into buildings as long as you can figure out how, and the world itself is deep and interesting with readable books, great world building, etc. It's a shame so few people seem to know about it now. But it blew my young mind a long time ago. I still go back every now and again. Using Exult, you can get it to run on the modern system. I highly recommend playing around with it, if only to see the precursor to modern open world RPGs. In some ways, I don't think any game has surpassed its world.

I use Philips Hue Led Strip lights high up on the wall behind me and a pair of Philips Hue play bars vertically behind my monitors. And a Mathmos Vinyl lava lamp. Looks nice.

I want some LEDs to illuminate/light up my gaming room

Main Post:

I want some sort of modern LEDs to illuminate my gaming room because I currently just have a main light that's just a really bright white light that is constantly shining in my eyes. I was thinking of getting nanoleaf, but then realise how expensive they were so I'm wondering if any of you have something similar to nanoleaf that isn't as expensive or maybe even a completely different lighting product that I can use my room.

I live in an old Queenslander style house, and for my study/craft room/ studio I just bought some of that self adhesive led strip light and adhered it onto the upper skirting and around the windows. Cost like $35 from Bunnings and came with a remote to change colour etc. Maybe not what you’re looking for and kinda basic tbh but really effective and very cheap.

How to make my led strip react to games/music etc

Main Post:

Hi,

I got a ws2812b rgb led strip, and hooked it up to my JRAINBOW connector on my MSI b550 board, and it works, i can controll it using openrgb, mystic light etc, but my intent is to place the led strip behind my desk and make it react to things like character HP on games, bullets on the magazines, that sort of stuff. I can't find a software that does that. I tried project aurora, but it seems like it only supports keyboards and mices, if it works with LED strips i can't figure it out how to make it work. I searched for guides but can't find anything relevant for my use case. Can anyone help?

Top Comment: If you want to install it outside your case, you can control it wirelessly using E1.31 from WLED or ESPixelStick using a supported ESP8266 based controller. For game integration, I would look into Artemis RGB, which is a spiritual successor to Aurora in many ways. It supports devices of all types, integrates with most official SDKs as well as OpenRGB, and is plugin based so you can add plugins for game integrations.

What's the best Temperature and CRI LED rating for board games

Main Post:

I'm buying a table for board games and I'm given the choice of the following for lightning options:

-3000K (R:255 G:124 B:38)

-4500K (R:255 G:192 B:127)

-6000K (R:255 G:242 B:224)

-RGB LED

What's the best out of those?

Top Comment:

5000K is very white (bright sunlight). That might be too harsh. The 6000K will be more blue, and may not be the best for reading and writing tasks. I recommend a high lumen 3000K with indirect distribution (facing the ceiling instead of the floor) on a dimmer. Indirect works best if it's at least 18" below the ceiling so it's dependent upon the parameters of your gaming area. CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 80 (which is standard in commercial) is fine. High CRI is important in retail and hospital environments but not so much for board games.
